If you have rented a storage unit or if you are planning to rent one, it’s important to make sure that you fully utilise it. You’re paying for storage space, after all, and you want to have all your items for storage fit well into the unit and the available space. Whilst there may be different reasons why we rent storage space – whether we’re moving to a new location and need to store some items, whether we’re going abroad for a long time, or whether we simply don’t have enough space in our own homes or business premises – there’s no denying the fact that you need to know how to properly pack and fill your storage unit. Here’s how to do it right.

  • Divide items for storage into categories

If you are planning to pack a number of different items, divide them into categories first (whether they’re books and educational items, sporting equipment, your kids’ items, mementos and keepsakes, and so on). Once you have divided the items into categories, make sure to pack them in separate boxes according to category.

  • Make an inventory

It’s also important to make an inventory of all the items you are planning to put in storage. This will help you keep track of your belongings, and it will also help you easily find where the items are when necessary. Additionally, an inventory is also a good idea in case you need to file an insurance claim if there is a natural disaster or accident.

  • Use good materials for packing

The materials you use for packing your items should be of sturdy and good quality as well. This should include differently-sized boxes or containers, materials for wrapping and protecting items, labels and sealing tape, and even blankets specifically for delicate or fragile items.

  • When packing…

When you’re packing your items, there is a proper method for it, too. One tip: don’t overload your cardboard boxes, particularly if you’re loading them with heavy items such as books. For heavier items, use smaller boxes, and place heavier items nearer the bottom and lighter items near the top of the box to prevent damage. To make sure your items are adequately protected from damp and mould and dust, your boxes should be properly sealed. On the other hand, you can also opt for storage services which offer climate control, such as the storage in Gloucester from Advanced Removals & Storage, which can provide sufficient protection from mould, dust, and mildew buildup. Plastic containers are also a good option for added protection. Your boxes should all be properly labelled in order for you to easily identify each box’s contents. This is also important if the box’s contents are fragile or breakable.
