Moving House With Your Pets
We have helped move more than our fair share of families over the last 30 years, so we know how stressful it can be. When your family has pets, it can be exhausting for you and your pets too.
We have created some useful tips to remember before, during and after the move when pets are involved:
Before
The most important thing to remember is making sure your pets are safe at all times. With all of the changes to the home (i.e. boxes, moving of furniture and people in and out of your home) your pets can become confused and can panic, so make sure they have a safe, settled place they can retreat to throughout the preparation.
On The Day
It is advisable to not feed your pets up to at least 3 hours before the move. If you plan to move your pet with you on the day, and you want to use a high-quality pet carrier, make sure they are familiar with it before the move so they do not become stressed when using it for the first time. Make the carrier comfortable and put their favourite toy inside there too.
It is also important to have fresh water available throughout the trip because pets can become dehydrated during the move.
In Your New Home
Giving your pet a warm welcome in your new home is important. Show them round and show them where they will be staying (e.g. their bed) and put a number of toys or pieces of your clothing there so they become acquainted with the new home. Give them plenty of affection too because your new home will be equally as strange to them as it will be to you.
